Bursary interview preparation and practice questions

Students invited to interview for a bursary or scholarship.

Prepare from the application you actually submitted and the funder's published requirements. You may need to explain your course choice, your academic work, your study plans and any financial information the application requested.

Selection criteria differ between funds. These practice prompts help you organise your own evidence; they do not predict a particular panel's questions or replace the funder's instructions.

Why have you chosen this qualification?

Name the qualification and one specific part of its content or professional direction that interests you. Connect it to a subject, project, work observation or other experience. Be ready to explain what you learned and how you reached the decision.

What academic work supports your application?

Choose a result or project you can discuss in detail. Explain the task, your own contribution and what it taught you. If the panel asks about a difficult subject or a weaker result, describe what happened and what you have done to improve. Keep dates and results consistent with your application.

How will you manage your studies?

Describe the commitments you actually have and how you plan work around them. Use a real example of meeting a deadline, asking for help or changing a study routine. If you still need to clarify accommodation, registration or course arrangements, identify the question rather than guessing an answer.

Explain financial information when the fund requests it

Review the study costs, existing support and remaining gap recorded in your application. Use the same categories and figures as the supporting documents. If something has changed since submission, prepare a clear explanation of the change.

Read any award conditions before the interview. Ask the panel to clarify an obligation, covered cost or process that you do not understand. Keep a note of what they explain and check it against the eventual written award terms.

Prepare questions for the panel

  • Which study costs does the award cover?
  • What documents or academic updates are required after selection?
  • Are there stated work, service or reporting obligations?
  • When and how will the next step be communicated?

Final check

  • You have reread the submitted application.
  • Your course choice has a concrete explanation.
  • You can discuss your academic evidence honestly.
  • You understand the published conditions and have questions for unclear details.
